Simon Hart MP has recently been appointed a trustee of the Endangered Species Protection Agency (ESPA)– a charity which preserves and protects critically endangered animals in Africa.
"ESPA works with the local community and enforcement officers to protect animals such as elephants, rhinos and apes and I will be particularly involved in their work with elephants in Swaziland," said Mr Hart.
"Since the 1990's there has been a decline of over 60% in rhino and elephant populations as a result of rising prices of ivory and horn. The situation is so bad that many experts believe the world's population of rhinos will be gone by the year 2024."
Mr Hart is currently serving on the Department for Farming and Rural Affairs Select Committee and was also the Chief Executive of the rural lobby organisation The Countryside Alliance before he became and MP.
He added: "It's fantastic to have been given the opportunity to become a trustee of this charity and I look forward to working with ESPA to try to preserve these animals for future generations".
