MENS SHED MEMBERS WELCOME MP TO THEIR HQ

Simon Hart MP has enjoyed a tour of Pembroke Dock Men's Shed and learned more about what the organisation is doing to combat loneliness and teach new skills.

Men's Shed Cymru is a Co-operative which oversees social groups or enterprises set up to benefit men.

The Pembroke Dock shed based in the Historic Royal Dockyard has 38 members who pay £11 a month. They get together at least once a week for lunch on a Wednesday in their HQ and members can come and go to work on their projects at any time of the day or night.

"I found it a very welcoming and warm space," said Mr Hart. "I am not the world's best at DIY but I can see that even a complete novice like me would be welcome!"

As well as teaching woodwork and repair skills, those who attend the Men's Shed also share knowledge about other passion projects such as radio.

"We are also working on fitting out our new workshop with equipment so that we can start projects in digital photography and IT and are also trying to get a metalwork lathe," explained Chairman Dennis Allsopp.

Members don't have to undertake qualifications but are encouraged to do so and members have previously passed courses in electronics, wiring and radio skills.

"I can see that the Men's Shed offers great camaraderie and friendship, as well as a place to brush up old skills or learn new ones," said Mr Hart. "It's a brilliant idea."
